TOPS'L 2010 TOURNAMENT SUMMARY
AMTA just finished our spring meeting at Tops'l Tennis & Beach Resort in Destin, Florida culminating with a number of firsts! For the first time as Executive Director, there was a rainy afternoon prompting some scrambling with the tournament, but Tournament Director, Nancy Olsen (yes, another daughter) was able to roll with rescheduling and so were all the participants!
Of course, the next first was having daughter Nancy Olsen available to step in as Tournament Director and substitute in women's doubles and a match of mixed doubles.
With the member/guest format, Grace Szczerbowski was able to bring her son as guest and they enjoyed playing mixed doubles as a mother/son team. Grace encouraged another Canadian doc to join and bring her twin brother as a guest...so Canada was well represented with five.
Of course the BIG first, at least for Craig Broome; he finally was able to win a match from Hugh Burris after numerous attempts!
At the Awards Banquet, new lyrics were written to the tune YMCA, but changed to AMTA. The new lyrics were written and sung by Linda Lemay, Lisa Nojaim and Nancy Olsen. A video of this FIRST is posted on youtube.com under "American Medical Tennis Association" if you care to watch it.
On Tuesday evening, everyone enjoyed a lovely cocktail party hosted by AMTA President Jan Voda and wife Melinda at their lovely home in nearby Miramar Beach. Their patio overlooking the lake was a wonderful place to spend a spring/summer evening.
The proximity of the condos to the tennis courts and meeting rooms was a delightful arrangement. One could sit on their patio, sipping a beverage, and watch matches!
