CLAREMONT RESORT 2010 TOURNAMENT SUMMARY
A small but mighty AMTA group attended the Berkeley, California meeting at the historic Claremont Hotel, Nov. 7-12, 2010. Four new members attended: Hamid Hussein, Loimbard, Il; Soren Nielson, San Diego, CA; Relinda Beesemyer, Glendale, CA; Stewart Gold, Berkeley, CA.
Sunday's social round robin was pretty much rained out, but Monday morning the sun was shinning and we were back in business. We had two local old-time members visit: Henry Beernink and Bob McIvor, both longtime members of The Berkeley Tennis Club. We also had a suprise visit from another longtime member, Betsy Roman, as she lives in nearby Napa. It was great to once again visit with them and catch up.
Daughter Linda was back again as Tournament Director with the addition of 9 month old Evan who everyone seemed to enjoy. The view from the hotel looking at San Francisco Bay and the Golden Gate Bridge was a treat, and the view from the courts looking at the stately Claremont Hotel (see pictures) was even more special.
On Thursday morning, a Board Meeting was held to discuss the need for a new Executive Director to replace Betty Olsen beginning January, 2012. Also discussed was the continuted need for new and younger members. The Board agreed to include all medical personnel into AMTA membership as a trial for 2 years. Lon Olsen has requested a new CME Director for the April, 2011 meeting in Florida. He will continue to apply for AAFP accreditation. The CME Director needs to secure speakers and run the 4 morning meetings.
At our Awards Banquet, we had a special guest, Bill Simons, the editor and publisher of "Inside Tennis." Many westcoast AMTA members have been reading this magazine for 30 years!
At this final dinner of 2010, the Presidential gavel was passed from Jan Voda of Boston, MA to Phong Nguyen of Redlands, CA. Phong's Presidency will include 2011-2013. Bonnie Sidoff of Tualitin, OR will be President-Elect. Jan Voda was presented with an engraved wooden plaque with gavel thanking him for his participation.
Some close and exciting matches were played. Due to several last minute cancellations, the draws were redone four times! Women's singles was cancelled and women's doubles was played as a round robin.
