WILD DUNES 2009 TOURNAMENT SUMMARY
30 physicians and spouses enjoyed 5 fantastic days of good weather, great tennis, well-attended CME lectures, Low Country cuisine, and fun socializing at Wild Dunes in South Carolina. 12 new members came to their first meeting at Wild Dunes, while returning members made them feel right at home. Four couples participating were both husband and wife physicians! The tennis courts, accommodations, CME meeting room, new hospitality hour, and beach access were all located within a 5 minute walk of each other.
Several new members shared their talents and skills with the group. Linda Lemay gave a lecture sharing the latest research on the benefits of acupuncture and led 10 minute courtside yoga sessions before afternoon tennis. Scott Treatman shared his meditative expertise with morning mindful meditation sessions. Craig Kimmel, orthopod, shared his knowledge of sports medicine by treating tennis injuries with Kinesio tape, while Michael Nupuf had everyone talking about herbal remedies (myth or miracle) for knee pain.
People were determined to play and enjoy their tennis despite afternoon winds and dry clay courts. Morning women’s tennis morphed into afternoon women’s tennis, with 4 female physicians participating. Five of our eight finals were decided in a 3rd set tie-break. The women’s doubles final had great competition, with Pat Geshke and Dr. Marie Kimmel victorious 4-6, 6-3, (10-8) over Carol Burris and Dr. Grace Szczerbowski. Men’s 65 & Over singles gave us a competitive finals match to watch, with Jila Waikhom victorious over Heinz Grohs, 2-6, 7-5, (10-5). Paul Young and Patrick Parks won a 3rd set tie break men’s doubles match against Zev Wajsman and Heinz Grohs, 7-5, 1-6, (10-1). Both mixed doubles finals ended with an 11-9 3rd set tie-break. Paul and Jerry Young beat Lon and Betty Olsen, 2-6, 6-3, (11-9), while Hugh and Carol Burris prevailed 6-4, 4-6, (11-9) against Craig Broome and Alison Sollee.
President Jan Voda put his own stamp on the meeting by resurrecting the tradition of AMTA hosting a hospitality hour. Members enjoyed free beer & wine with snacks from 6-7pm on Monday, Tuesday & Wednesday nights. This social event proved to be a hit with some members staying well beyond the 7pm mark while others paired off with new friends for dinner outings. As usual, Linda Bookman kept the tennis tournament organized and on time all the while taking hundreds of photos that were shown in a slideshow at the Awards Banquet. Many of those photos can be seen here.
