INDIAN WELLS 2008 TOURNAMENT SUMMARY

Thursday morning CME group.

30 Physician and some spouses enjoyed the November desert at its best, highs in the 80s, blue skies, beautiful shadowed mountains and glorious sunsets with warm nights.

This was AMTA’s first visit to the Indian Wells Tennis Garden where the Pacific Life Open is played in March, and we stayed across the street at the new Homewood Suites by Hilton. From the responses at the Awards Banquet, the venue was a hit. Homewood Suites provides a hot breakfast and a light dinner Mon., Tues., Wed., Thurs., all included in the low room rate. Therefore, you always had breakfast and/or dinner companions. It worked as a great mixer.

The eating facilities worked out great because we had 7 new members attend their first meeting: Dr Green Hsueh and her dentist husband from Northridge and they took home the winner medals for mixed doubles; Dr. Armando Huaringa from Fullerton took home the B men’s doubles winner medal; Dr. James Krueger from Huntington Beach took home consolation finalist medal & men’s B doubles finalist medal; Dr. Gangadhar Madupu from New York was brought by Dr. Vadlamudi to be his doubles partner; Dr. Bruce Mertz from Texas and his brother Dr. John Mertz from Arkansas, both fine players, and the Mertz brothers took home the finalist medals for the A doubles; Dr. Davis Noorthoek from Santa Rosa was the consolation finalist for C singles. Dr. Noorthoek just sold his winery in June and bought a second home in Sun City, near Indian Wells, so he was hunting furniture between matches.

This meeting was Craig Broome’s final meeting as President and was awarded a lovely wood plaque with gavel for the years 2007 & 2008. Jan Voda will be our new President for 2009 & 2010 starting with Wild Dunes, April 19-24, 2009.

As Craig’s grand finale he had the privilege of playing his semi-final singles match on the stadium court. Craig said the last time he was in that stadium, he watched Nadal play there. Please check out the photos of Craig and John Mertz playing on center court in the photo section.
