SMOKE TREE RANCH 2007 TOURNAMENT SUMMARY

62 people, both members and guests, met in Palm Springs at Smoke Tree Ranch March 11-16. Many came with the idea of getting out of the cold weather, and BOY did they! Temperatures reached the high 90s, 20 degrees above the average temp for March. AMTA bought out the local store of their Gatorade. For the first time AMTA members were able to bring a guest to join the fun of the tournament play. The format seemed to meet with great success. 9 new members and spouses along with 6 guests and spouses made for some new blood in the tournament, as well as the CME speaker’s roster.

Our Men’s under 70 singles draw was full with 16 participants. New AMTA President Craig Broome retained his singles title, but not without a challenging finals match against the Arizona desert doc Ron Sassano. We also had a complete mixed doubles draw with 16 teams. New members Scott and Wendy Haupt from Salt Lake came out on top. A number of the participants took advantage of the nearby Pacific Life Open to attend some of the pro matches. And 35 of us attended the “one of a kind” Palm Springs Follies Wednesday night! Smoke Tree again presented some gourmet food for breakfast and dinner. YES, you still walk into the kitchen to pick out your entrée served by the chef.
