WATERVILLE VALLEY 2006 TOURNAMENT SUMMARY

15 great doctors + beautiful red clay tennis courts + charming rustic (affordable) accommodations at the Snowy Owl Inn + temperatures in the 70’s and a mountain setting = five days AND nights of endless fun.

In contrast to some of our larger meetings, a more intimate group of colleagues gathered in Waterville Valley to enjoy the calming pace of New Hampshire. Participation in this smaller group gathering provided plenty of opportunity to socialize with friends more intimately.

The social scene started with a wonderful opening dinner at the Diamond’s Edge restaurant where we all celebrated Bob Comb’s 74th birthday with a song and cake. The fun continued on Monday evening with a cocktail party hosted by AMTA President Paul Young and his wife Jerry at their ski house. The whole affair was beautifully catered and enjoyed by all. The group was so small and dynamic that dining together became the theme of the week. Tuesday night we continued with dinner at The William Tell, a charming local restaurant with delectable gourmet entrees that tantalized the palate. We closed the restaurant. Wednesday night we began with a table of 8 and ended up with a cube of seven tables surrounded by 16 raucous individuals toasting and gabbing the night away. If you weren’t there – we missed you.

The tennis this week did not let us down either. There were challenging matches in every draw. Eight of our matches were determined by exciting third set super 10 point tie-breakers. The women’s doubles round robin had a three way tie for 1st and was decided by a complicated calculation of sets won and lost. Jerry Young and Pat Geshke came out on top. A crowd favorite was an exciting and entertaining mixed doubles final that found the Geshke’s coming from behind to win 4-6, 7-5, 10-3 against first time mixed doubles duo, Bruce Bammel and Alison Sollee. Craig Broome won his 6th AMTA singles title in an exciting match against the never-at-a-loss-for-words, Bruce Bammel. Paul Young remains the champion of the Swift Swinger men’s singles division. If you were not in this draw – we missed you here also. We sure hope you can make it next time.
