36th ANNUAL WMTS TOURNAMENT MALTA 2006 TOURNAMENT SUMMARY
|
Forty-two traveled with AMTA to Malta for the 36th WMTS meeting October 14-21, 2006. Nearly 400 turned up in Malta, representing 22 countries. The Hilton Hotel was the tournament hotel. Take a look at the view from our balconies.
Twenty-nine of us came 3 days early to Malta to sightsee before the tournament began, and there is lots to see and do in Malta because there is so much history to experience. They have pyramids 1000 years older than the Egyptian pyramids, and they have beautiful churches from the 15th and 16th centuries built by the Knights of St. John. Their language is Arabic based, but they use the Latin alphabet. However, this special language is only spoken in Malta. They have been greatly influenced by Italy because it is so close, but because of being an English colony, they also have great English traditions . Malta is an old city with a smorgasbord of cultures represented. Malta is also about 95% Catholic. There is no abortion allowed and divorce is forbidden.

The pre-trip had a full day excursion to Gozo, a sister island with a lovely lunch enjoyed right next to the blue Mediterranean with refreshing ocean breezes. The Saturday opening dinner was held at a large farmhouse complete with a marching band marching with us down the narrow streets. A special Knights dinner was held Monday night. See the photo below. And the closing banquet was held at the Hilton Hotel with a live orchestra. The medical meetings were held in the evening at the Hilton with breaks for refreshments.

AMTAers came home with some heavy hardware for their efforts in the tennis tournament. For her first WMTS meeting, Cori Kirkpatrick came home a winner in the W55 singles and W55 doubles with Carol Burris. For their first match in doubles, they played Dr. Jacqueline Davis and Pat Manion a long, long 3 set match decided by a 3rd set tie-breaker. They played round robin, so Davis/Manion came in 2nd. Speaking of Jacque Davis from Texas, she also was the runner-up in the MD women's 55 singles, but she teamed with new president Craig Broome to win the Mixed M55/W50. Carmelita Moczynski/Renate Reiss were runner up in the W60 doubles. Clarice Odell won the W70 singles with Carole Foran runner-up. Clarice Odell/Jerry Young won the W70 doubles. Carole and Bud Foran won the Mixed M75,W70. Betty Olsen was runner-up in the W65 singles, but losing in 3 sets to Renate Reiss.
