2013 Meetings

Wild Dunes Resort

Charleston, South Carolina
April 28 – May 3, 2013

It was the AMTA’s second visit to Wild Dunes Resort in the past two years, and thirty members and guests, including a number of first-time attendees, enjoyed this lush property and sandy beaches at the northern tip of Isle of Palms.  Although rain threatened, the skies cleared and all matches were played on schedule; Jack Jacobson coordinated an excellent lineup of local speakers.  President Bonnie Sidoff presented the Craig Broome Award to Phong Nguyen, a long-time ambassador for AMTA with his kind, fun-loving personality, boundless energy and strong leadership.

WMTA Congress & Tennis Championship

Jurmala, Latvia
August 17 – 23, 2013

For the American contingent, the Latvia championships were highlighted by a pre-trip to Riga, where they experienced the life, history and rich culture of this beautiful Latvian city. The group explored Riga by foot, then boarded a bus to visit local businesses – the Laci bread factory, one of the oldest in the region, and the Valmiermuiza brewery – finishing with a private tasting of local beers. The tournament was held in the seaside resort town of Jurmala, with its 21 miles of white sand beaches.

Americans were well-represented at a memorable Awards Dinner held under a white tent on the beach, complete with live music and an opera performance.  Numerous Americans left with international medals.

Barton Creek Resort

Austin, Texas
December 8 – 13, 2013

Despite unseasonably cold weather for Austin in December, and late-arriving luggage for a few unlucky participants, AMTA members bundled up in leggings and ski caps and took to the outdoor courts, while courtside spectators stayed warm under space heaters.  But the tennis action was hot and spirited, with nationally-ranked Hugh Burris tested in a lengthy, entertaining singles final by a very game Mike Dawson. Hugh also entertained with a fish-cleaning demonstration that highlighted a lecture by doubles partner John Kirkpatrick on food-borne illnesses. Elizabeth Rutledge won kudos for her continued steady climb up the novice tennis ladder and resounding applause greeted the presentation of the Craig Broome award to Lon Olsen, whose thoughtful contributions to the organization over the last 45 years are too numerous to count.
